Here at Premiere Roofing & Gutters, we recommend a TPO flat roof to many of our commercial clients in Western and Central North Carolina. But what is TPO? And what makes it a good choice for protecting your building from the weather? Let’s consider those questions.

What is TPO?

TPO stands for “thermoplastic polyolefin,” a reference to the material’s chemical composition. It’s a durable, light-colored roofing product that’s used around the world.

What Sets a TPO Roof Apart From Other Options?

Flat roofs are the most common design for commercial structures. But keeping a flat roof free of leaks can sometimes be difficult since rain can easily pool on its surface.

TPO was created to meet this challenge. Here are the advantages it offers:

  • Ease of Installation: TPO can typically be installed in as little as two days. This means reduced downtime for the facility owner. It also helps to minimize the risk of rain-related water damage to your building during the installation process.
  • Resilience: A TPO flat roof system is highly resistant to tears, punctures, and severe weather conditions. In fact, TPO roofs can last up to 30 years.
  • Energy efficiency: TPO does a good job of reflecting UV rays back into the atmosphere. This can make a significant difference to your utility bills during North Carolina’s extended summer season.

Information from the National Roofing Contractors Association(NRCA) shows that approximately 40% of commercial buildings in the United States have TPO roofs. Smart business owners know that TPO is the leading choice for a durable, practical roofing material.

TPO Flat Roof Installation

TPO flat roof installation begins by either cleaning or removing the existing roofing material. Once this step is complete, our technicians will install a layer of rigid insulation across it.

This insulation serves two purposes. First, it helps to regulate your building’s interior temperature year-round. Second, it guards the TPO membrane from potential damage underneath.

TPO is manufactured in sheets that are between 10 and 20 feet wide. Our crew will trim and fit the material to match the dimensions of your roof. We will attach it using either an industrial adhesive or mechanical fasteners, taking care to ensure a watertight bond at all points. The final step is to heat-weld the overlapping TPO layers together. We achieve this by using a roller and a commercial-grade forced-air device.

Once this step is complete, we will perform a rigorous inspection to ensure your new roof is ready to go the distance. You’ll also have the opportunity to inspect it yourself.

Once in place, TPO roofing typically requires minimal maintenance. It’s a good idea to clean it on a periodic basis using a long-handle soft bristle brush, a mild detergent solution, and a source of low-pressure water such as a garden hose (not a pressure washer).
